町内会有志が集うボランティア組織
きっかけ
岡山市政施行100周年の平成元年、記念すべきこの年に地元町内会の人たちが「京橋に市民が集う継続できる事業は何か考えられないか」という話が持ち上がった。思案を重ね毎月１回の朝市を開くと決まり、同年９月、第１回の京橋朝市が開かれた。以来毎月開かれて今日に至る。
京橋の歴史
岡山の西国街道の城下入口にあたる京橋は400年に亘り海や川を行き交う船の港があった。そのため生活物資はこの地に集まり、材木、米、炭、灰、藁、鉄、ほか市場や旅館、茶屋など栄華を極めた場所である。近年まで港として瀬戸内海航路を支える海運の拠点であった。鮮魚市場もあった。この場所は、岡山城下町の大手門から徒歩1分のところ。現在の京橋は大正9年に設置された鋼鉄製、往時の状態が維持されている。
