General information
当山は山号を豊山（ ぶさん ）と称し、寺号を長谷寺（ はせでら ）と言い、正式には豊山神楽院長谷寺と申します。
「こもりくの泊瀬山」と万葉集にうたわれていますように、この地を昔は豊初瀬（とよはつせ）、泊瀬（はつせ）など美しい名でよばれていたので、初瀬寺、泊瀬寺、豊山寺とも言われていました。
朱鳥（ あかみどり ）元年（686）道明（どうみょう）上人は、天武天皇のおんために銅板法華説相図（ 千仏多宝仏塔 ）を西の岡に安置したのち、のち神亀四年（ 727 ）徳道（とくどう）上人は、聖武天皇の勅を奉じて、衆生のために東の岡に十一面観世音菩薩をおまつりになられました。
上人は観音信仰にあつく、西国三十三所観音霊場巡拝の開祖となられた大徳であり、当山を三十三所の根本霊場と呼ぶいわれであります。
現在の長谷寺は、真言宗豊山派の総本山として、 また西国三十三観音霊場第八番札所として、 全国に末寺三千余ヶ寺、 檀信徒はおよそ三百万人といわれ、 四季を通じ「花の御寺」として多くの人々の信仰をあつめています。
