筑波山系の山々に囲まれた盆地で、里山の美しい原風景が色濃く残る。柿や梨などフルーツの栽培、有機栽培など環境保全型農業が盛ん。皇室献上柿の産地としても有名。
また、産地と消費者を直接結ぶ「産直」を全国に先駆け、いち早く取り組んだことでも知られる。
東京都心からは60〜70キロ。
