日光東照宮は、日光霊峰の山懐聖地恒例山にあり、中禅寺湖から流れる大谷川と女峰山から流れる稲荷川との河合いの山岳水明の地に鎮座します。神域は、樹齢400〜800年神杉につつまれ、その中に点在する社殿群は自然環境と見事に融合する宗教的文化空間です。
